BMWs from 2003 and more literally drink the oil you give them. BMW has known this issue and it is normal for that to happen because it is a performance car. You NEED to add oil before the regular oil change or you will run out like what happened,

It is the practice of using thinner oil grades, the oil is cleaner synthetic oil, no smoke from tail pipe with the allowed blow by. Just add as needed, never depend on timelines for servicing to check if levels were stable or not.
