How much oil consumption is ok?

Asked by wantavalon Oct 18, 2016 at 09:16 AM about the 2011 Toyota Avalon Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I want to buy 2011 Avalon with 98K miles. Owner says it burns between 1/4
and 1/2 quart reg oil in 5000 miles. I have been reading other questions about
PCV valve and air filter replacements...will that do it? Change to synthetic oil?
Car is at questionable dealership-couldn't trust them with answers. Carfax
shows regular oil changes at 5000+ or -.

The bottom line is don't buy the car, it's a car that's only 5 years old and is burning that much oil. A car really shouldn't burn or use that much oil/ http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2015/06/excessive-oil-consumption/index.htm

A 1/2 quart in 5,000 miles is nothing. New cars can use more than that. How would the dealer know how much oil it uses?

I don’t find that to be a lot them avolons run and run some more they hold a lot of oil I think like 6.5 quarts don’t sweet it just do oil change every 4 grand and your good and I would not use a synthetic oil conventional is what I believe it was intended for. Full synthetic may make you lose oil pressure a good 5w 30 oil 6.4 quarts I believe and car will go 300,000 plus sold mine at 290,000 5 years ago and she is still driveing that one my newer one is almost 200,000 now and all I did is tires 2 times and front breaks 2 times there amazing
