Can Contamination Be Caused by Hose Replacement

Asked by cecranford1126 May 28, 2020 at 05:14 PM about the 2010 Volvo XC60 3.2

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Had power steering hose replaced at a shop.
Apparently pump failed while there. Took it to
a second shop (where pump was under the
second shop’s warranty), and they said metal
debris got in the system, causing
contamination and most likely, the rack and
pinion to be bad. They’ve put two pumps on
but they keep failing. They also put on a filter.

Question: could this contamination have
happened at the first shop? They are saying
there’s no way that metal debris would come
from a power steering hose replacement, and
that we just have a bad pump.

I would believe that metal debris could come from a failed power steering pump. Not from the hose replacement. Make sure they're putting the correct power steering fluid in the system. Some imports require a specific power steering fluid. I would also suggest you take the vehicle to a reputable service facility that specializes in imports. Some gas station garage or chain type of repair shop is not going to be able to fix it! Hope that helps! Jim

Always use CHF 202 power steering fluid, and don't mix in ATF. And whatever you do, NEVER use that generic "power steering fluid" that most stores sell. It's basically water. As far as the metal contamination, as long as the hose that was replaced was a new one, that shouldn't cause any contamination. The main sources of metal debris in the power steering fluid are the rack and pinion or the pump itself. The fluid will need to be flushed to remove the debris and prevent damage to any power steering components.
