EVAP code

Asked by Haley Dec 12, 2019 at 08:55 AM about the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A few nights ago my check engine light came on.
When I hooked up the scanner it gave me an EVAP
code. So I tightened the gas cap. The light went off.
Everything was fine. Yesterday I went to put gas in,
and it kept clicking off and building up pressure, as
if it was full. It was not full. So I figured it’s a
breather issue and could look at it this weekend.
Now this morning I leave to go to work, and my
truck keeps jerking, like it’s not getting fuel. But
now it’s not throwing any codes, no lights nothing.
Has anyone dealt with this before?  Any idea what
causes this?  When I ask a friend, he just gives me
the answer that it could be a lot of things.

Could be the tank is not venting. When the tank can't vent it can be tough for the fuel pump to operate, it has to overcome that vacuum being generated in the tank by fuel consumption. Check the atmospheric vent for the EVAP system, the charcoal filter, and the vent solenoid. Look up a diagram of your EVAP system (may be one in your owner's manual) to see where those parts are, the vent solenoid (along with purge solenoid) may be located in the engine bay.

What was the "evap code" number from your OBDII scan reader? When the truck acts up like it is not getting any gas, while the truck is still running remove the gas cap and see if the issue immediately goes away without doing anything else. If it does immediately correct and run fine then I believe it is probably the vent solenoid assembly which is mounted on the truck frame, top side of it, behind the cab ( I think nearly directly below the gas cap door). It is cheap to replace, you can easily do it. I had to replace mine. My truck was doing this also giving me the check engine light and always acting like the tank was full too when putting gas in the tank. (30 minute job to replace it.)

This is what I was talking about earlier. This item caused my similar problem. Please click on the link to read about it. https://www.samarins.com/glossary/purge-valve.html People who typically "overfill" their gas tank cause this assembly's solenoid valve to stick closed and not work properly. It gets checked by the truck's computer every time the truck is shut off and re-started. So, that is when it will most often show up. If intermittent in sticking it will work fine sometimes and not work fine at other times. When the assembly is replaced you have to wait for several start/stop cycles for the computer to turn off the check engine light, but it will eventually detect proper function and turn off the CEL.
