4Runner wheel question

Asked by bbblyons Oct 09, 2013 at 06:22 PM about the 2010 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD

Question type: Car Customization

I have the opportunity to purchase a 2010 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4x4 V6 with 20 inch
wheels (it is a Certified Toyota used car).  It is in excellent shape and is a great buy.
However, the 20 inch wheel that are on the vehicle are very flashy (real gaudy looking)
and not what a 76 year old should be ridding in.  The dealer can take those wheels off
and replace them with standard 17 inch that goes on the lower models of the 4Runner
(SR5, Trail),  Is the Limited engineered to operate (suspension etc) with only the 20
inch wheels?  Thanks.   Bill Lyons, PE  (billclyons@hotmail.com)

If they are replacing the stock 20" wheels/tires with stock 17" ones, the 17" will be about an inch and a half shorter (Not as tall as the 20"). They will have to recalibrate the computer for the speedometer, brakes, and drivetrain to function correctly.

Here is the solution? Assuming the tire on the 20 inch wheel is 275/55/20 which is 31.91 inches. A 265/70/17 is 31.61 inches! A difference of 1% (.3 inches) Which is negligible and wont impact your car! Now if they put 17 inch wheels get tires that will give you the same diameter as the 20 inch wheel ! Go to TACOMAWORLD.COM select the the tire calculator to confirm my math if you wish! If you find this helpful please click my helpful link button! Engineering then is NOT IMPACTED!!

BTW TOYOTA DOES CARRY 20 inch stock wheels for the Limited! Make them give you comparable value 20 inch wheels are very expensive regardless of what they look like! Toyota stock wheels are nice! If not possible get the trail wheel, SR5 is the lowest value wheel!

Formatting was lost sorry! Look at revolutions per mile 632.04 versus actual 638.1 a difference of 1% and bottom speedometer speed at 65 mph versus actual at 64.38 mph (computer)
