Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My ac compressor kick on and off not putting out any cold air, at the same time it engine will jump about a 1000 rpms at an idle. Same thing happens when i run my heater if im defrosting my windows. If just running the heat my engine idles up and downs about 500 to 700 rpms. Any ideas whats wrong or how to fix it. also it is over 40 degrees of so out side when im running the heat my engine sometimes makes a noise like im hitting rumble strips?

I'll need some more information in order to more accurately asses your vehicle's issue. 1. Regarding the A/C: Does the compressor cycle regardless of whether the A/C is actually turned on or not? Does any air come out of the vents at all? If so, is the air hot? *NOTE* The idle increase is normal, as it is supposed to increase when you turn on the A/C to keep the compressor from bogging down the motor. The heater and defrost are causing a similar respoonse, but in their case it is due to the additional load on the alternator when those higher-draw circuits kick on. 2. The wavering engine idle/rumble strip noise may be indicative of one (likely several) broken engine/transmission mounts, which may be allowing the intake manifold to vibrate against the firewall under certain circumstances. Please check the condition of your mounts and let me know what you find, and we'll go from there.
