I talked with a volkswagen mechanic or at least the company was listed under Certified Volkswagen Mechanics.
Double check that. It's possible that the radio is part of the anti theft system but then again press for more details.
I am a Certified VW Tech. You can replace the radio. We do it all the time for many different reasons. Whoever told you that is full of crap.
Short in circuit board. Was told that radio had to be repaired, could not purchase new one to replace it because the radio comes programmed with the car.
