Computer Fried?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

GuruQ7RDT posted a message about a year
ago RE installing battery backwards
(reversed polarity). Well, I did it. Genius!
Anything, I replaced the alternator (damn) &
now I have multiple lights on dash.  Doesn’t
work and the powers during is out. I was
told, by a civilian (non-mechanic) that I fried
the computer. True?  If so, what now? Car is
a 2010 VW Jetta SL 2.5.  I really don’t wanna
put any more money into this car. It’s been
quite the money-pit since my buddy got into
a minor fender-bender with it. Thanks.

You are right, the ECM has brain damage, the only alternative is to replace it,

Dude, thanks for the info. Can I get one from a junkyard? I heard that they are very expensive. If so, does it still need to go to a dealership to have it reprogrammed? I’ve been a software developer for over 30 years there’s got to be a way for me to do this.
