Vibrating at 45+-

Asked by Jaybird317 Nov 28, 2016 at 01:26 PM about the 2010 Subaru Outback 3.6R Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car is a Subaru 2010 six-cylinder outback that
vibrates (shimmy) at 45 mph plus or minus and then
goes away  and comes back at 60 mph and then
goes away above that.
The problem is not tire related .  It's been back for
Wii balancing and rotation and a card when snow
tires were on as well .

If you have ruled out the tires then check out the wheel bearings and the front suspension and steering rack. It could be out of alignment or have worn suspension parts.

Jaybird317- hey, sorry to hear all this. As a last resort, why not let the Subaru dealership take a look at your car. Couple of questions for you; how many miles are on the car, I imagine that your engine, transmission and head gaskets are all fine? What's your overall fuel mileage in the city?

If not tire/wheel balance nor a bent wheel (since you've rotated with out change), AND BJs and TREs are not sloppy, I'll go with an aging axle. You can try squeezing grease back into the "big end" at each end. If no change try to have the axles "watched" for visible vibration when driving carefully while on a secure lift. It's more likely to be an axle than a center driveshaft or wheel bearing. Indeed, if you've replaced a CV/halfshaft you may have gotten one with insufficient grease or tightness. Usually they will NOT "wear in", and require swapping in another axle. Good luck.
