Worth it?

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Hello, I’m new to the forum.

I’m going back and forth regarding a Subaru I saw.

2010 Subaru Outback at the dealer with 195k on it,
one owner. More highway miles. Price is $5,500.
Carfax shows no service history except for one oil
change.  Dealer does not have any paperwork from
original owner.  Car looks immaculate but the
mileage is holding me back.

Is this a good deal? Or too good to be true?  I had a
98 Subaru and loved it so that’s why I want another.
Are the new ones money pits?  I’ll only drive this
vehicle around 7-8k a year if I get it so usage will be
minimal.

Thank you

Any car with that many miles is a gamble even if it is a good car with impeccable service records. With limited use it might last for several more years. Ask yourself if you can afford things like head gaskets or other expensive repairs.

If the head gaskets have not been replaced already it may soon need them done. That is a pretty expensive repair. Also the transmission has that many miles on it also. I wouldn't even think of buying it.

Thank you both for talking me off the ledge. The search continues! :)

The added price for a low mile car is probably worth it (and then some).

DaveSub- I agree with the others that this is too much of a gamble...a lot of miles....it might be a good car, but, any gasoline engine past 200,000 is trickier with repairs and maintenance....any major failures makes it harder to justify keeping the vehicle.... BUT, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in scant "Carfax records"....it's more important to have actual receipts from the prior owner of the vehicle....a lot of repairs and maintenance NEVER get reported CARFAX... not that important. I own a 2010 Subaru Outback Limited...and despite what you hear or read online especially from "haters" on the forum..it's a very nice car... I've had mine for almost four years...car is great and not expensive to maintain.. runs fantastic...we love driving it... And gets pretty good mileage as well.. One more thing, the CVT transmission is extremely smooth and CVTs have less moving parts than other conventional automatics... Once you drive one and understand the simplicity of how they operate and save fuel, you'll appreciate them even more... The fact that this car went 195,000 miles on the original transmission is a testament to the strength of the transmission and the engine.... don't know if the head gaskets are original, but it wouldn't surprise me...I personally know someone who had this car and went 290,000 miles... with no problems whatsoever... ... Good luck and Happy New Year. --Mark
