Its hooked up wrong or you have power wire to close to solenoid power wire or you have a huge parasitic draw to frame, like a bare power wire (likely battery terminal) touching the body/frame. If you cannot find the issue I would take to a shop this could cause a fire.

You may need to test the ignition by testing for power at the solenoid (at starter) power side with ignition switch turned off there should be no power to it, if there is power there then ignition switch may be bad or a short from a another wire/device is touching it/shorting into it.

If these are re-manufactured units this could be the issue even if it has happened three times thus far.

It start like that, Bought the 2010 ford escape 3 month ago, after 1 month the starter start to fail and not engage, only make sound as sliding, I order starter from internet Took it to electrician here in Doha Qatar, currently live here now, he removed the old one, 3 wires, big red, second small I think command, and ground, and installed Chinese make starter from internet, it work directly, after 2 weeks The Chinese new starter start to keep engaging after motor start, till one day, didn't not disengage and smoke went out from solenoid connected to the starter, i removed the battery cable, then I ordered ford starter, and install, same thing worked for 3 days this time and went disengage till remove cable battery,
