If I buy a used car through a dealer do I need to have the car checked out by a mechanic? How does that work?

It would not hurt to have a used car checked out by an independent mechanic but that will have to be between you and the dealer. They may not let you take a car to another mechanic. If they won't let you check it out then either walk or get some sort of money back guarantee or a warranty.

I would have the car looked over by a mechanic no matter where you buy it. I would also do a VIN check on the car....A little money will save you in the long run...

Also if they claim it is a certified pre-owned car, check who did the certifying - a reputable major car dealership is fine, Tricky Ricky's Car Shack is not.

First run a vin check, there are several free ones on the web. That way you will know what the car should have on it. Always take it to an independent MB shop or another MB dealership for inspection. It'll cost you about 100.00, but it is money well spent, as you may find things you can live with but have a repair value you can use to discuss price. Always better to be informed before than to be surprised. Good luck, it can be fun !
