What does it mean when the symbol (!) shows on the dashboard?

That's a "parking brake engaged" indicator. It means that you probably didn't disengage it fully when you drove the vehicle, Hopefully you're aware of your parking brake and use it every time you park your vehicle. If the light is on when you drive the car first thing in the day/night, just try shifting into park, then reapplying the brake then disengage it.
