Car makes really loud grinding noise when in drive gears. Doesn't grind in any other gear except the drive gears. What could be the cause for this?

My manual '96 Toyota Corolla sometimes is very hard to shift after I have sat at a light for a while. I have to turn the car off and put it into gear and then shift it. I took it to a repair shop and they said they drove it around and that it was shifting fine. They didn't seem to want to look into it anymore than that. What could be the cause? It's getting too hot? i have a 2009 corolla and it seems the rpms re getting higher and higher in order to switch to 3rd/4th gear. It does not shift until 2400-3100 rpms. Is this normal? what levels of rpms is normal? 1 Answer
