Cracked radiator

I have a 2009 m35 that has been
overheating. Needle goes from middle and
quickly rises to the top. There is a small
crack at the to of the radiator. I'm going to
purchase a new radiator but would like to
know what may have caused it so I can fix
that too. Has anyone else experienced this?
