Rattle or small clunky noise - Front right passenger wheel well

I went on a bumpy road a while back and my front right passenger side
wheel well started making a small clunky noise on bumps and rough roads
when coasting or accelerating. When I feather the brakes even a little or to a
stop, the small clunky noise quiets completely. I have taken off the wheel,
made sure no rocks are stuck, tighten the lug nuts, ect. Any ideas o'great car
gurus? I have an appointment for a realignment next week that may fix it but
who knows.

Loose caliper bolt, lost pad shim. Usually these "boppity-bops" are due to worn front anti- swaybar bushings and/or end-links. Rather than replacing the rubber bushings you can test temporarily by slamming a long nail into any thin gap between the bushing and the swaybar. This savage act will tighten it up and possibly eliminate the rattle. Of course this only works if the end-links aren't rattling. There's a chance that it's a worn balljoint or tie rod end, as this elevated age, but the swaybar bushings always go first. Also, if the metal dust-shield is really frail behind those brake rotors you may want to just pry them off, as they're useless anyway, and easilt bend and trap rocks in old age. Nut do check the caliper bracket bolts, as a loose or missing one will of course cause a clunk that might disappear when squeezed. Report back. Best, Ern

Further, I would NOT spend money on realignment unless your tires have worn unevenly, as Subies rarely can be knocked off line. It's a rather expensive way to buy a visual inspection of other parts...which may get missed unless focused on. I've seen the great majority of old Subies on their 4th or 5th set of tires and STILL rolling straight. Tough beasts....
