Could flooding have damaged my seatbelt?

Asked by Alex Sep 11, 2017 at 05:06 PM about the 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A few weeks ago my car got some water in it due to local flooding. The car
drove fine, but the carpet needed to be replaced. I brought it to the local
dealer, who took care of that. Upon picking up the car the drivers side seatbelt
was not working (it would not retract). They are trying to convince me that this
sort of damage can emerge way after (the seatbelt worked fine for several days
before I brought the car to the shop). Not sure if I should believe them or if this
is a genuine possibility.

Of course water could damage it. I would replace it soon as it is an important safety feature.

I guess the question might better be phrased: Is it more likely that it worked fine for almost a week before the flood damage ruined it or that it was damaged in the shop?
