09 dodge ram. Antifreeze all over engine

Asked by Terry Nov 20, 2017 at 11:46 AM about the 2009 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We left the house and on the way back, my 09 ram started
making a squeal noise as if it was the serpentine belt. I
seen nothing wrong, just the noise. Got home, then drove
10 miles to take my kids somewhere. Half way there, my
battery light came on. I figured maybe my belt was having
issues and messing with my alternator. Half way back to
my house, I noticed my truck running warm. Not over
heated but warmer than normal. Got 200 yards from the
house and it shot straight up to red line hot. Stayed there
for 10 seconds, then all my lights kicked on. Then I heard a
strange noise and my red line hot temp gage went from to
hot to all the way cold. Pulled into my place (only 50 yards
away at the time). Smoked rolled out from the hood and
when I opened it, antifreeze was all over the place but the
serpentine belt was still on. Also noticed where my truck
was parked right before I left, there was a bit of antifreeze
on the drive way. It was dark and didn't see it when we left.
Is this the water pump, or something with the thermostat?

Sounds like it could be a coolant leak somewhere like a hose or the water pump, so check these first. The leak may have sprayed antifreeze onto the serpentine belt, creating slippage between the belt and the alternator pulley, causing the battery light to come on.

Filled with antifreeze. No leak. Started truck. No leak. Waited for it to warm up and heard a noise before it could. Looked under the hood and found that every time it made the noise, the fan would move. Shut off truck. Checked fan and found that the whole water pump pulley moves and not just around. I could move the fan in and out 3/8". Pretty sure this is the problem but I could be wrong? Need a new water pump assembly. When it warms up, it probably leaks from the pulley. When I had it running for that brief 5 mins, the electric lightening bolt light was on and the 4x4 check light was on. Plus there was no heat through my heater.

With that description, I'm pretty sure the bearings have failed in the water pump. With 3/8" end play, the water pump probably isn't pumping much water either. Replacing the water pump should take care of the problem.

Thank you sir. I had my suspicions about it in the beginning but had to be sure and needed to ask around.
