First question is what made you want to check the oil level? Did oil lite come on when accelerating or going around corner? Hopefully, if any of above is true, you didn't do any damage. You put 2 qts in and checked the level later in the afternoon. It holds 4.5 qts, and possible it was so low that it never reached the low mark. You should ck level right after you put it in on level ground. Did you check at the same spot later. Almost impossible to leak or burn that fast, you'd see a puddle or a lot of smoke as it dribbles on the exhaust manifold and piping. Is it running smooth and quiet? Need more info.
