Make sure you have the gear selector fully into "Park" and the key turned to "Off", then it should release. I hope this helps.

On many cars if the battery goes dead you can't remove the key

I've had the same issues with some variation. Mine will sometimes take a couple of hours to release the key. I replaced the car battery and thought that had fixed it because the next two drives were fine, but it still does it. I replaced the fob battery, but not that either. Definitely trying all of the suggestions of ensuring full park and steering wheel in position. Seems that the longer I drive it the more often the key doesn't release with the delayed click and release. Seems like there are a lot of people with 2009 Laredo Grand Cherokee that have this same issue.
