Car not locking with key fob

Asked by GuruD5TN22 Jan 23, 2024 at 07:20 PM about the 2009 Toyota RAV4 Limited V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently, my key fob won't lock my car unless it is in my garage.  I get the

same result with both key fobs.  If the car is parked away from the garage, it

will not lock.  The first time it happened, I assumed the fob battery needed

replacing, but the car starts fine and locks when I get home and park it in the

garage.  I haven't yet tried replacing the fob battery.  I don't know if I

accidentally pressed a button or changed a setting.  Any thoughts?

Change one of the fobs battery and recheck, but don’t be surprised if it still does it, the system might need a complete reset, however the vehicle is getting old and electronics and wiring age poorly.

Think of your car as a radio broadcast and the fob as a receiver. Inside the car, the signal is contained and at its strongest. Outside the car, the signal goes everywhere, so the garage also contains the signal more than the outdoors. As inside the car, the fobs work fine and the car recognizes them. the signal is find, but that signal is diluted outside the car. Follow directions in the owners manual for changing batteries in both fobs. If there's a problem after that, follow directions for reprograming the car to the fobs. If that doesn't work, and I think you'll be fine, have a dealer diagnose the problem, there might be a problem with the car's receiver.

It seems to be working OK now. I also thought of the containment of the signal in the garage, but I now think it was weather related. My garage is detached and unheated. We went through several days of below 0 days last week, and I didn't start or drive the car for the first couple of those cold days. The locking issue happened when I finally drove. We are now back to 30+ degrees and the locking worked fine this morning. If we get another cold snap, I'll be sure to at least let the car run for some time. My car is showing its' age. Thank you for the responses.
