I have a 2005 Escape XLT. Strong shuttering while coasting

Asked by Stankotp Jan 27, 2017 at 09:53 AM about the 2005 Ford Escape XLT AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have just bought a 2005 Escape XLT. While coasting at high speed, a strong shuttering goes on like a strong tapping on the floor boards. When I increase the speed, the shuttering goes away but as soon as I start coasting again...the same problem. The 4x4 light flashes on the dash during this time. Seems like the 4x4 kicks in when it wants. This happens during wet and dry environment conditions. Should The 4x4 kick in smoother at high speeds or is the shuttering normal?

Probably a bad universal joint at the rear drive shaft. Also check the fluid level in the transfer case.
