09 grand caravan wont start with passenger in front seat

Asked by Just Sep 12, 2023 at 10:48 PM about the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 09 grand caravan has an issue where if something heavy enough to
engage the passenger in the front passenger seat sensor it will not start. So it
will not start or run when someone is in the passenger seat. So far my
mechanic is at a loss as to the cause and how to fix this

My first thought was that we're getting punked here... But if this is really happening, it's the first time I'm hearing about this in my 65 years of playing with cars. Electronically, there's no reason for this to happen. So guessing, there could be an electrical issue in your 14 year old van. Maybe there's a crossed/shorted wire in the harness to the seat sensor that's interfering with the starter circuit, and it might be to the ignition switch, which I suspect is defective and is causing all this. Sensors communicate with the computer and a failed signal could cause the computer to disallow a start. You're going to need more than your everyday mechanic to solve this. Maybe run a multimeter beginning at the seat sensor and continuing until you find a short, or just replace the ignition switch on spec.
