Overheating Problems

Asked by Techie Nov 04, 2017 at 10:08 PM about the 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser Wagon FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Before we went on a trip, the car was overheating to the point of the coolant
boiling (gurgling noise). So we had the water pump and timing belt replaced
by the mechanic, and said it was good to go. During the trip we overheated
again (and on a midwest highway in the middle of nowhere, no doubt). This
happened about 4 more times to and from our destination. Each time we
immediately stopped and let it cool for almost 2 hours. The coolant level was
good, and so was the oil. That was a few weeks ago. Yesterday I was idle at
a drive thru, and the gauge skyrockets and dings at me with the temp sign. I
cut the car off for a moment, thinking I'd need to pull over and wait for the
engine to cool off, but when I turned it back on, the temp was back to normal.
The heat gauge idles between C & H; is that normal?

Any ideas on exactly what is wrong with this? The mechanics where I live
are not very informative at all. Any help would be appreciated :)

Between hot and cold on the gauge its suppose to be less than halfway (closer to cold) depending on thermostat you have in it. Have you replaced the thermostat and are you sure the cooling fans work, if not need to check the fans and/or temp sensor (not temp sender). May need to bleed the air out of the cooling system. Also since it has over-heated now a few times I would suggest you have the engine compression tested on all cylinders and test for exhaust in cooling system (which is also a symptom or the gurgle) to confirm if head gasket has failed. If so you will need a new head gasket.

Haven't replaced the thermostat yet, going to work on that this weekend. A buddy of mine and I took a closer look at where the thermostat would be and found some of the coolant around that area. Small leak maybe? Recommended thermostat.
