2009 Jetta 2.5 overheats when AC is on and idle. Mechanic can not find root cause. Fans
shut off at certain temp.

sounds like the strain the ac is putting on the car is causing the belt to possibly slip. have all your serpentine pulleys checked especially the belt tensioner. if you can take it out to check it, because of the aluminum body of the tension-er they tend to just break apart at the unexpected with out any noise. check the belt driven fan while the belt is off and also check the ac's clutch it may be getting stuck when the clutch engages. hope this helps
