When you put the car in gear you're putting a load on the engine. If the idle is smooth and even before putting into gear, look for an air/fuel fuel supply problem. If the idle before putting into gear is rough, check for ignition issues (worn spark plugs/wires) and vacuum/EGR leaks. Those will only get worse when the engine is under load.

.I have a Ford Focus 2004 I have just bought, it seems when I stop at a junction with my clutch down in first gear the car stalls after coming to a stop. Any one know why this is?
