coil spring

A piece of my left rear coil spring broke off what would cause that to happen.

General fatigue and the fact that sub standard materials are used these days. It's very common on rear coil springs on GMs of that vintage but Colbalts and G6s seem to be the most affected

Metal fatigue. I would replace both rear springs and probably the front ones too.
