My Chevy Aveo 5LT 2009 starts only when it wants
to and my mechanic cannot find the problem. He
has checked everything electrical he can think of.

Scan for fault codes even if the check engine light does not come on. Gotta be something gone wrong and the engine computer will tell you if you ask. Usually.

Try replacing the ECM under the hood. Buy ecm from junkyard. But make sure the car is wrecked somewhat front or rear bumper etc..that means the electronic parts were working condition before got wrecked. But if you pull a part from a car that doesn't have any damage that means it has the same problem as yours. Or but from ebay a used one but its fully tested. If you have a stalling problem, that is another issue
