The only way to know is to get the codes from the onboard computer. Most Advanced Auto parts or AutoZone stores can use a handheld scanner to get the codes from you car for free. Then you can look up the error codes and see what is wrong.

Buy a cheap ($30-40) scanner as you'll use it multiple times over your Subie's lifetime. Fine investment.
