The gas gage wasn't working
when I bought the car..

Your looking at a fuel sending unit. I don't remember if you can get it from the trunk.

I believe Tom had hit the nail on the head. Good chance it is the sending unit but the other items are definately a possibility too. Good luck.

It's all new. He hot wire is OK and the ground works. If I unplug the unit the as gauge will go towards full but plug it in goes back to empty.

I took the unit back out of tank and heckled it and with test light it old flash and move the arm gets a little brighter when all the way up so the sending unit seams to be working it's not working at the dash.If it's unplugged the gauge will go towards full.
