Service engine soon light

Asked by Kevinjz Jun 29, 2014 at 03:50 PM about the 2008 BMW 3 Series 328i Sedan RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving the car yesterday, as I stopped at a light the rpm dropped to 5-600 rpm, the
service engine soon light came on while pulling away it was very rough running, then it
ran smooth and the SEL went off. This happened again today while leaving a toll booth
on the NJ Turnpike, again it cleared up. Any suggestions ?

Get a code reader and check the codes. They sell code readers fairly cheap a harbour frieght and autozone. Also check your fuel cap sometimes it cause the light to come on which may put it limp mode.

My 2013 BMW 320 series does the same thing when the light illuminates. I also noticed that it would come on and off at different intervals and run like heck. Runs rough and then I turn it off and restart and fine. I think it is an internal mechanism that is trying to get the maintenance done. I run premium all of the time and it is still doing it. Will get it serviced soon, but don't really appreciate it if is a ploy to get you in faster.
