Button on gear shift will not go in/compres

2008 Envoy with abput 85 K miles. Truck will start, but
button on shifter will not go in or compress to put in gear.
Any ideas. 1 owner prior to me & is in excellent shape

Could be the mechanical mechanism in the console is sticking. Otherwise, that IS a symptom of a failing ignition switch.
