2009 Murano head gasket failed for 2nd time in under 2 years - only 59K miles?

Asked by dcchase May 13, 2017 at 01:39 PM about the 2009 Nissan Murano LE AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought my 2009 Murano 5 1/2 years ago with 30K miles on it.  I do not
drive much, under 5K miles a year.  Almost 2 years ago the head gasket
broke/blew?  There were no signs, one day on my way home the
acceleration stopped and the car began to jerk.  I had the warranty and
had the car repaired.  Now, almost two years later the EXACT same thing
happened, oddly almost at the exact same spot.  I no longer have a
warranty, the car only has 59K miles on it.  How is this happening??  I
service my car regularly and only drive about 6 miles a day.  Is there a
recall?  I have many people complain of the same issues.  Would really
appreciate some insight on what to do.

I wonder if during the previous repair if they check the head mounting surfaces and the deck of the block for straightness? If the cylinder head is warped or the block mounting surface is not straight and level the head gasket can soon fail again.

Thank you for your answers! I am beside myself. I love this car but am beginning to feel it is not safe. Had I been on the freeway, I could have been killed (live in LA). I will definitely have these items checked - will be towing car to dealership on Monday, as they have done everything to this car since I bought it. My biggest concern is there were no warning lights, no smells, nothing. The car was driving great. I get a warning light if my tire pressure is low... I would think if there were enough leakage of oil or coolant or whatever I would have some warning light to check the fluids BEFORE the head gasket goes out. I am assuming there is no recourse from Nissan as the warranty is expired and the car is 8 years old. BUT they did replace the head gasket less then 2 years ago and it is failing again plus there are only 59K miles on the car... Been reading that this is a common problem for 2009 models and wonder does anyone know if there is a class action suit?
