Engine overheats and brakes drag going uphill

Asked by MCAustin60 Aug 16, 2015 at 11:38 AM about the 2008 Honda CR-V EX AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an odd problem.  When going up a super steep grade near my home, the engine revs high, but the car goes slow, and the engine begins to overheat.   When I get to the top of the grade, the rear brakes smell like they've been dragging the whole way.  This ONLY happens when the weather is hot (117 today in Palm Springs).   My CR-V has 190k on it and runs fine other than that.  Car is all original except for a new radiator and cooling fan last month.  Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like your transmission is failing, it's working against the engine and causing it to work harder and overheat. I would definitely recommend taking it to your mechanic for an evaluation or consider trading in or retiring the car. Look, you've got almost 200,000 miles on this, what do you expect, 300,000 miles? ? Sorry, not going to happen.

You've driven more than 25,000 miles per year? Wow, you've got some commute and schedule, or you take a lot of trips!
