Your Malibu has a chip transponder in the key it could be faulty or worn out (its molded inside the key). You can get them fairly cheap. Try replacing and reprogramming a new one before you do the expensive stuff.

2013 Chevy Malibu. Our key will open the doors. Put the key in n try to start and nothing. Can't remove the key and have nothing, no lights, no sounds. Has happened three times. Replaced backup battery as it was testing a little low. Thought that fixed the problem but this happened again. Scan tool really didn't help much. Communication between key and ??? We are still looking into this problem. Keep trying to start and eventually the car starts suddenly.
