Constant issues with MAF Sensor for Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have to replace/clean the MAF sensor on my 2008 Toyota Camry about 2-3
times a year. I've had the oxygen sensor replaced last year and have a new
air filter and cabin air filter.  I always seem to catch it before the warranty
goes out. Toyota is stating that it needs to be a genuine Toyota sensor as it
might not work as well.  I need help.  Now the code is still staying on even
after being replaced by a new one. I've talked to a few Camry owners who
have stated they have had the same issues.

What engine in this vehicle? Considering a MAF cleaning seems to resolve the issue for awhile....I suspect the engine air filter is shedding debris on the MAF sensing element. A rather common problem with aftermarket filters. You might also considereal servicing the PCV System. Check the Air Filter Box and see if there is oil in it. Also...is this vehicle using excessive amounts of engine oil?

It's a 4 cylinder. I just replaced the air filter and cabin air filter. I had the oil consumption test done and it failed - was on the 8 month waiting list and had it replaced last year. The MAF sensor was tripped right after I got it back from Toyota - they cleaned it again. It's not using excessive oil now.

Ok..before cleaning/replacing the MAF again....have someone carefully check the intake tube between the air filter box and the throttle body for cracks or splits. Also one should check the electrical connection at the sensor. Sometimes...fauty probing the sensor connection with test equipment could cause your issues. Keep us up to date on this interesting issue.

Hi. They said the sensor I bought was bad. The garage put a new one in and it's been working correctly and no more chugging, etc. I guess it's be ok for another few months. very disappointed. The mechanic said that the way they make them now have the little pin is on the outside and it gets dirty quickly.

OK I would suggest you ask for and save the old parts. Depending on driving conditions.....MAF sensors can be cleaned with the proper cleaning solution and procedure. Google MAF cleaning for your make model and year. A photo of the old part would help in providing with further advice. Good Luck
