AC system will not switch to Defrost vents

I have a 2008 Ford Explorer. the AC system works fine. However, when I
switch it to Defrost, the air is still directed through the dash vents and not the
defrost vents. What am I missing?

Actually the A/c system is designed not to be able to run on the windshield. Only heat can be used to defrost. I am guessing when you have the air set to anything other than a/c it works fine on the defrost setting right?

No. Heat, AC button on or off, no setting will turn on the defrost vents.
