I have a 2008 Chevy HHR LT, 70,000 miles. For the last couple weeks the
speedometer goes out & the transmission shifts to 1st. I'm 66 & on disability
(poor). What should I ask mechanic to check?

Just tell the mechanic what you observe and let him do the diagnostics. It sounds to me like you just have a bad speed sensor on the transmission. Not expensive at all.
