Something sliding when accelerating or braking

I have a 2008 Pontiac Torrent AWD. Most of the
time I accelerate it sounds like something is sliding
back in the rear of the car. Same for when I brake,
but it moves forward (I assume). I first thought it
was just my spare tire moving around but that
seems to be pretty secure. Any ideas as to what
this could be?

Does it have a tool compartment in the floor of the rear cargo area? Is there something loose inside?
