2008 Ford Fusion - Gas is not registering?

I have a 2008 Fusion, it has been great but in the past month there have been 2 occasions where I put gas in the car and the "Miles to E" did not go up, nor did the meter? I have no idea why and the miles to E are dropping so I'm worried that there's no gas in there and I don't want to run out. The gas station assured me that their tanks were full and there were no issues on their end. This was 2 separate gas stations now. Any idea what would cause this to happen?

bad fuel pump. or more specifically the fuel level gauge on the pump
