Does anybody know why in the US trailer hitches for the 2008 Passat 3.6L 4 motion wagon are not sold? What is different between the European and the American version? Can I build my own hitch with out interfering with the cars controls etc?
probably due to differences to meet U.S. crash standards. building your own hitch is not a good idea. there is a lot going into a hitch to make sure that it will not only mount properly to the vehicle, but also that it will keep the trailer attached to the vehicle under many different conditions. there is a lot of engineering that goes into it, not just grabbing a welder and some steel.
Madmopar, I understand the structural implications and my intention would be to modify an available unit to adapt it to the 4 motion wagon, BUT I am concerned that the the ECU or other control units in this specific car need to be reprogrammed to accommodate the car pulling and braking the additional load.
