Low Oil Pressure Warning -2008 Passat Komfort 2.0 Turbo. The check engine light and low oil pressure warning came on at 88,000 miles.

Asked by gvanpassat Jul 01, 2012 at 08:53 PM about the 2008 Volkswagen Passat Komfort

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The engine knocked loudly and it was towed to a local mechanic.  The mechanic's initial diagnosis is
that the oil pump needs to be replaced and it could be linked to the oil sludge issues experienced
with previous turbo models of the engine.  Furthermore, just replacing the fuel pump will not resolve
the issue - he thinks further damage has occurred and the entire engine should be replaced.  His
thoughts are that the manufacturer's defect has not been corrected and even with replacing the
engine, the issue may reappear in the future.  Is this consistent with the experience of owners of 2008
and newer Passat Turbo owners and should replacement of the engine be considered or just focus on
replacing the oil pump at this point?

the mechanic you took it to was vw certified? if not replacing engine is cheaper than pulling one out and tearing it down? especially if you do take it to the dealership

i would say that u should use a motor flush to flush out the oil slug and replace with new high grade oil

i dont recommend the motor flush it will only make the metallic filter on the oil pump get all the sludge and clog. the sludge is caused by the oil not an vw defect. you need to change the oil more regularly and maybe change the oil you are using. the sludge appears because of the rest of the unburn fuel goes to the crank case through the piston rings and contaminates the oil causing it to create the sludge.
