When in drive responds like in neutral.

When I put the car in drive it responds like it is in neutral.  I can pull out in first gear with a
slight slip and shift all the way to drive without problems.  I am hoping it is not a blown
transmission.  Fluid is about a quart to two quarts low and not red in color (possibly burnt).  
Does this sound like a fluid issue or something that will cost more??

Could just be that the trans fluid level is low but have it checked by a competant trans shop. Does this car have a fluid dipstick so you can check the fluid level yourself? If so, do it first and if low, add proper fluid to the "full" line.

The fluid was about a quart low. I just added to a hot car and tried to drive it normal with the same result. If it was the fluid would this be an immediate fix or could a take a little while to work?
