If it is a dual fan design, try turning the AC off first and then crank it. If it no longer comes on, the system is working correctly.

it is a duel design, so i will turn ac off then crank, if that does not work then do i take to a mechanic or what could be the problem, b/c my temperature gage stays on cold while i am driving b/c the fans are on. so i guess that is keeping the engine cool, or i might not be getting an accurate temp reading

Your temperature sensor may be bad. You can find it right below the thermostat, below where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. You have to remove the engine cover and a section of the exhaust to access it.
