There is a tapping noise coming from the dash board, can you tell me what it is?

At no particular time a tapping noise comes from behind the dashboard, what could be causing it and do I need to have it looked at?

Yes, I believe the a/c is on when the tapping starts. There is no rhyme or reason to when it comes or how long the tapping continues.
