Because if you are in an accident it won't work. That is what it's telling you but

TRY UNHOOKING THE BATTERY TO RESET IT...MY AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON IN MY CAR ONCE AND THAT WORKED....I ALSO HAD A CAR ONCE WHEN THAT LIGHT CAME ON I HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE TO AIR BAG TAKEN OUT AND REFOLDED..IT SOUNDS SIMPLE BUT IT WAS NOT. I URGE YOU NOT TO WORK ON YOUR AIRBAG YOURSELF. ALSO THE BULB IN THE DASH MY BE BURNING OUT OR SHORTED OUT THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME ALSO.
