Question type: General

While driving, the engine appears to die for a split second.
The engine light will flash once, then go out. This happens
randomly with no apparent or obvious cause. Runs great
normally. Any ideas on what could cause this. 85,000 miles.

That check engine light, during misfire, might have set a fault code so have it scanned for free at an auto parts store and fix accordingly. It might be a crankshaft position sensor, code P0320, $40 for a good one.

Had it checked with 2 different code readers. No codes. The misfire sounds like the correct diagnosis but what's causing it is my concern. Plugs, coil packs, injectors, position sensor? I'd rather not replace things that aren't bad. Is there any other way to test it?

The check engine light is not on. Only flashes for a split second during "misfire?".

If it didn't set a code, it must not be that bad. I would guess it is ignition (spark) related. Might be a loose connector. I know that when a crankshaft position sensor is failing, you while feel a brief misfire AND see the tachometer drop suddenly to zero and right back up. If it quits entirely, it will usually restart when it cools off, and that would set a code P0320.
