can a bearing make the check engine light come on?

Asked by ROZAY1 Apr 18, 2014 at 11:06 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Tahoe, the check engine came on and I was told it may be the
bearing. Could that be? If so, does something else need to be repaired in
addition/conjunction to the bearing? Thank you :)

What was the actual check engine code number?

a bad wheel bearing "can" throw a abs or taction control code. But usually those dont show as a check engine light. What bearing? there are many. And what was the code? It doesn't sound likely

I'm sorry I don't have a code... I was told the ABS light was on also along with the check engine light (per the service dept. I'm wondering if this could be the reason it was running rough? Andrew, your answer makes since :-)

I just asked for the codes so once I hv them I will let you know....thx again

If it is an engine bearing, you would possibly have low oil pressure, even a knock in the engine. As stated above, there are a lot of bearings. Nail them down as to which bearing and why they think so. I'd then go to another reputable mechanic for a second opinion and get a cost and time estimate to do the repair and compare it to the dealers estimate. If both say the same thing and you're not really sure they are correct, there is always a third garage to go to. Why spend thousands of dollars on repairs you don't need. Then again you vehicle is 10 years old, and we don't know the driving conditions, driving habits or maintenance habits either. If the ABS light comes on, you can always go to a "good" brake shop for a look see. It could be the pads are worn, or fluid low. Check the tires for unusual wear. If a wheel bearing is going out, you could hear some noise, but you have to turn off the radio, wife and kids first, lower the window down and drive on a back quiet street and listen. Make turns and listen. Does the steering wheel vibrate when driving at speed also? Before handing over a credit card, check first. It took me years to find, but I found an honest mechanic that is so busy, he only will do what needs to be done, but it is done right and the old parts are saved to be shown after the work. He even will take me in to the garage area and show me the reason why he feels the work needs to be done. He is spot on every time. Good luck. Then again, it's your money.

I have a 2006 Dodge ram 1500 4 wheel drive sport I was driving down the road and my check engine light came on. Then a couple mins later my bearing on my front driver side went out I think. It was grinding really bad and stearing wheel was vibrating pretty bad. So my question is will a bearing make my engine light came on
