any recalls on the Ford Explorer XLT rear differential?

Asked by diane May 21, 2013 at 10:37 PM about the 2003 Ford Explorer XLT V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Ford Explorer XLT (2003) has a very loud sound coming from the rear.  I was told it needed a differential.  I was also told I am looking at over $1,000 to get it fixed

Yeah okay so when does the noise occur. Is it a whine? Is it a clunk? Does it do it all the time? Over bumps? Around turns? Come on give us some more info.

I have a 2003 XLS with over 100K. No problem with the rear end. Have lived in the same residence since vehicle purchased. No notification from Ford.

Go to or call the nearest dealer and give them your VIN. They can look it up very quickly and easily. Recalls are about safety items - not noises. Want to save a buck? I suggest taking your chances at the wrecking yard. Not very difficult to change out.
