When I start my 04 Ford Explorer Xlt after it idles it starts to sputter like it's going to shut off and then it does. Can someone please tell me what the problem could/is. Thanks.

You could be in the need of a tune-up. Check the owners manual for intervals. You could also be in the need of spark plug wires, which should be changed at the time the plugs are changed. Question: When the engine is cold (overnight parked) will the idle be high (over 1000 rpms) when started, then settle down later after it warms up? How does it run after warmup? Could also be the IACV, search the net, it will state how to check.
After a over night sitting, no it dont idle high. After it is completely warmed up it runs perfectly fine. It only happens when the engine is cooled/cold.
Also, if you have access to a digital ohm meter, check the resistance of the primary and secondary coil. Misfiring plugs can, overtime, damage a coil pack. The process is easy and can be conducted with the coil on the vehicle. If out of spec, replace the coil pack, a five minute job. A motorcraft coil pack will cost about 85 bucks. Oh, and if doing a tuneup use the correct motorcraft plugs, wires, and if needed, coil. OEM parts are sufficient. Long lasting - double coated - super duper is not required. If they were, they would have been installed by the manufacturer. Good Luck
